Thinking about Potty Training and I Don't Have a Clue

Now that we have Ella sleeping in her crib at night, I am beginning to think about the next big hurdle - potty training. I am only thinking of it because Ella has started showing some signs of maybe, possibly, being ready, or at least moving in that direction. If she happens to be without a diaper (like before/after a shower, letting her bum dry between diaper changes) and she happens to feel the urge and we happen to be together near the toilet at home, she will say, "iyi" (ihi or pee in Cebuano). When I put her on the pot, 9 out of 10 times she goes. I praise her and she gets a very pleased look on her face.

Based on this, I decided to stop diapers at home just to see what would happen. I learned she won't tell me if I happen to be in the other room and she won't say yes if I ask her if she needs to go - even when it soon becomes apparent that she actually does need to go by the puddle that results as soon as I turn or walk away. After two days of cleaning up a LOT of pee, and given the fact that I was beginning to get frustrated and upset with her and it started to feel like a power struggle (I know enough to know that getting upset with a child about such accidents or trying to coerce them into using the potty is very counterproductive and potentially damaging) so I decided to wait for a while longer before we try again. I just purchased a toddler toilet seat attachment and my mom will bring it with her when she comes next week. I've decided to wait at least until then.

Since then, she has stopped telling me when she needs to pee when she doesn't have a diaper (this happens way less often than before) and has started to want to climb on the toilet herself just to pretend to go pee (she makes a sound with her mouth) and use the tissue to wipe but doesn't pee. If I try to assist her up or down, like I have done for months, she gets angry and yells "No!"

So I'm fine to leave this alone while I compile some information and advice. I don't have time to read and research all the available methods/approaches out there so I'm just going to put this up and ask for help from those who have been there done that. I know every child is different but I would really value hearing from some other mommies out there.

So, if you have a few minutes, please enlighten me by sharing a bit of your experience.

How do you know when they are "ready"?

When they seem "ready," how do you go about it? What has worked for you?

Many thanks.

All About Ella

I've been compiling notes for the past few weeks about Ella's development so that when I sit down to blog I can actually remember a few things. It is amazing how far she's come in just three and a half months.

The biggest progress as of late is that Ella is now sleeping in her crib in her room at night. Yay! It's been over two weeks of success in this area so I think it's safe to say this is the new normal. I am getting up several times each night with her (whereas when in our bed she slept the whole night) but usually for only a few minutes each time.

She has surprised and amazed us with her obvious level of security to sleep in her own room at night. When she wakes up, she's not distressed. She just usually is either hot or cold or is wet or wants some water, or often just a little reassurance that I am there and will come when she calls and will hold her hand till she falls back asleep. Most of the time all I have to do is pick her up and hold her for about a minute and then put her back down.

The other exciting thing is that over the past month she has really begun to bond with her Daddy. She now regularly reaches for him, sometimes even prefers him. She loves to be held by him at certain times and clearly relaxes and rests her head on his shoulder when he picks her up. She gets excited when he comes home from work. She even went out with him to the grocery store a few times while I stayed at home. On the other hand, she has started to outright reject him suddenly when we least expect it. She has lashed out at him at home and in public and has even kicked him and screamed "No!" when he'd try to pick her up. I take this as a positive sign and further indication that she really is becoming more attached to Andrey. She did this with me in the very beginning as well. I think it's her way of testing him to see if his love for her is real and lasting.

Ella is beginning to catch up in her language development. In the past month, she has exploded with new words. She has become quite vocal and talkative at home.
  • She is very observant of everything around her. She identifies things she sees throughout the day. She often says, "See?" and "Mom! Look!" She regularly repeats words I say and seems to be practicing new words all the time.
    • She can say many body parts and can point to/recognize even more
      • Latest phrases/expressions - What's that? (dat?), Please (meee), Excuse me (Q-me), Thank you (thdoo), Let's go!(Go!), Uh oh!, C'mon!

        • I will list all the words I can think of that she can say just so I can record and count how big her vocab is getting. I will list the words she is saying but know they don't sound like that yet. She usually says only one or two syllables of the word. I love it that I can understand her most of the time and can translate for others as needed. It makes me feel happy that I know my daughter like I do. I think she can say more than 100 words and understands many more! Go Ella!
          • Cloud, sky, bump, backpack, book, mango, vitamin, up, down, wee!, yippee!, wow!, ihi, poo-poo, walk, ride, ligo, diaper, kitty cat, dog, cow, Mom, Daddy, Fia, Mimi, Papa, Grandma, Grandpa, Annika, Mike, home, noodles, cookie, snack, dingdong (it's a snack mix here), No!, okay, night-night, toes, knee, hands, eyes, ears, nose, mouth, Hi, Bye, tissue, wet, dry, bum, ball, run, shoes, shirt, mango, apple, egg, rice, bread, fish, baby, swimming, pool, init, hot, tubig, juice, yogurt, star, higda, outside, tita, inday, hinay, gamai, chocolate, light, bee, butterfly, naa pa, wala, guba, pillow, write, two, three, bubbles, agay, boat, meow, again, work, balloon, book, bowl, swing, slide, bowl, banana, bread, cereal, bite
        • Comprehension - understands and responds to commands such as "put it in the garbage please" or "put daddy's keys back on the table" or sit down, stand up, brush teeth, give me my phone...

        Other fun/cute/funny things about Ella
        •  Ella has a very matter of fact "Hi" and "Bye". Sometimes when we have to leave or finish an activity she'll just say, Bye and be fine to move on to the next thing. She also says bye to the food she just put in her mouth and says bye to the pee in the toilet when we flush. She often says See!? and look at something (like my cup of coffee). I'll say, that's mommy's coffee and she'll say "hi!"
        • She loves to look at and hug photos of her with her Mommy and Daddy

        • She daily gives me many spontaneous hugs and kisses, which always turns me into mush.
        • She loves to give us zerberts and then laughs hard at herself and the sounds she produces. Both of us get zerberts to our necks when we are holding her and I get special zerberts to my upper thigh in the shower. I guess my thigh is at the level of her mouth and I must admit, does produce a rather nice and loud sound given the amount of blubber in that area. Reminds me of when I was a kid and my brother would call me Thunder Thighs and Lard Ass. How sweet.
        • When Ella needs a little quiet time for her daily "big job" in her diaper and one of us happens to come near she will say, "No!" and "Bye!" and point in the opposite direction indicating where we should go. It's hard not to laugh at her because of the extremely serious look on her face.
        • Ella always kisses my owies. Whether they are induced by her on accident during play or otherwise, she will look at me with a concerned, compassionate look on her face and then kiss my boo-boo. So sweet. She is very sensitive.
        • When eating a meal together, Ella loves to clink her sippy cup to our glasses in the gesture of a toast. She will sometimes do it over and over and over again but we always oblige. It reminds me of when Andrey's parents were here. Ella kept on toasting Grandpa who was sitting across the table from her and had to get up from his seat every time she'd want to toast him. He was very gracious to satisfy her request numerous times each meal. She will also sometimes toast whatever food we're eating together. She'll lift her cracker to me, for example, and look at me with her eyebrows and chin raised and expect me to join my cracker with hers. Food is such a wonderful way to connect.
        • She loves to gargle. Mostly she does this with water just to get a laugh but a few weeks ago she had a mouth full of egg, tilted her head back and attempted to gargle. As egg sprang forth from her mouth, she laughed and laughed, while making eye contact with both Andrey and me to make sure we were watching. She's such a ham! At bed time when she wants a sip of water I have to watch her to make sure she'll swallow because she loves to hold the water in her mouth, look at me slyly and threaten to spit it out. Cheeky monkey.

        I-600 Approval

We just found out today that our Petition to Classify Orphan as an Immediate Relative was approved. That's one very important step toward getting Ella a visa to the US so we can finalize her adoption there. Yay!

We actually filed the paper work at the US Embassy in Manila in October and were told we should have an approval and visa medical appointment set up before the end of the year. We never heard anything so we followed up in December. USCIS just got back to us and said the approval was actually issued on November 12th. We're hoping this won't set back our plans to finalize Ella's adoption in April-May this year. We are required to have three, post-placement home studies within six months before we can travel to the US to finalize. Our first post-placement study was done in November. We were hoping to get the second one done in January when we travel to Manila for our visa medical appointment. The third is tentatively planned for mid-March so we can have a report done by the end of the month and we can travel to the US by April 1st.

We plan to be based in Alabama where my parents live for as long as it takes to finalize. We were told 2-3 months but we're hoping for closer to 2 since it will be difficult for Andrey to be away from the office in Cebu for that long.

So there's the latest on the paperwork end of things. And just for fun, here are a few recent photos of Andrey and Ella singing into mock microphones. It's a jump rope that Ella regularly picks up and sings into (and sucks on the end a bit). Just imagine loud but muffled sounds coming out of her mouth, something like "Lay Laaahh Looooooohh". She's so cute!

        Ella's Dedication

On December 19, 2010 we presented Ella to Jesus in front of our spiritual family in Cebu and with Andrey's parents who were visiting at the time. Many of you know how special to us our church community is here. For the past few years whenever there was a family publicly presenting their child to the Lord there was a deep ache in me to be able to do the same with our child among this community, this family we have grown to love. Each time, I would cry out to God for this opportunity - to have our child soon and to still be living in Cebu long enough to hold this special ceremony in this place. What a joy to see this day come to pass!

Andrey explained that Michella's name means "gift from God" and how we wanted to acknowledge in the presence of a part of our spiritual and natural families that we receive God's great gift to us but we don't have claim on her. We want to affirm that Michella is God's and we want to commit to being the kind of parents that would encourage her to choose to live her life according to that truth.

As her mother and in the authority of Jesus, I cut her off from the evil intentions of the enemy and blessed her life and future generations with all the good things God has planned for her.

Andrey's parents prayed for us then several close friends shared words from Jesus for Ella. I got a bit emotional at this point, especially when a friend spoke about God redeeming and returning to Michella all that she lost and then some. Such good stuff! Interestingly, a few friends saw pictures involving Ella and stars. I had to share right then and there that Twinkle Twinkle is Ella's favorite song and she sings it numerous times a day.

She is our bright little star! We are overjoyed with this treasure and look forward to seeing who she becomes!

Back from Outer Space and "Ming!"

If I may state the obvious: I am hugely behind on posting and I have a bunch of photos, video and reports (and hundreds of irretrievable thoughts) I want to share so I'll just do a bit at a time.

How do you post about a three week blogging lapse anyway? Well, it's just not going to happen. This is my new reality. Like the rest of my trains of thought and attempts to start and complete a task in the same day, or the same week for that matter, it's gonna have to get done piecemeal. I'm a new mom. I can play that card for a little while longer right? (By the way, why didn't anyone tell me how HUGE of an adjustment this would be for someone who is very detail and task-oriented??)

As for a quick and general report, we are doing great. It's almost been three months since we brought our daughter home (oh and she is the coolest girl ever!). Andrey's parents were here for a month but went back to Canada just before Christmas. Their visit was a smashing success. Not only did they time their visit so they'd be here while Andrey was in the States for 10 days, Ella exceeded all of our expectations and connected with them quickly. What fun to see their relationship bud and flourish.

We had a lovely first Christmas as a family of three. It was so special. After a crazy busy season of work and travel, Andrey is home and off this whole week with little work to distract him. He and Michella are reconnecting and bringing the bonding between father and daughter to a new level, which is awesome (more on that later).

Now for that funny thing my daughter does to words... She shortens them to their last syllable. Only Andrey and I can tell you that min = vitamin, pee! = yippee!, pul = apple, and Ming! = SWIMMING!!! And that word is spoken with much excitement anytime a pool or water is seen or mentioned.

Ella's inner motivation to swim is impressive for a two-year-old. Aside from giving her lots of swimming opportunities, we have done no persuading of her learning to swim. During our first weeks together she started dipping her head under water spontaneously and has gradually progressed to what you see on the video below. We are amazed as we watch her determination and fearlessness push her to new levels of swimming success. As my mother-in-law pointed out, perhaps this is how she approaches life.

This is from a trip to Bantayan Island in mid-December.

Ella, Grandma and a Clown Nose

          It stays on Grandma's nose...

... but why doesn't it stay on my nose??

        Bouncing Back

I feel like I've been officially initiated into this motherhood thing. I took care of our child when I was sick with a flu-like virus that Michella and I came down with last week. I had seven days of fever, Michella five. Interesting how the same virus can affect mother and child so differently. Her? Other than the high fever and a slight increase in neediness, she appeared fine. Me? My entire body hurt, I was nauseated, I lost my appetite and I felt completely weak. Suddenly my 11 kg daughter felt like she suddenly gained weight. I felt so bad I thought we had Dengue fever. Thankfully that wasn't the case. And Thank God my in-laws were here to help! Especially since Andrey has been in the US for the past 10 days and had to leave a few days after we fell ill. We've been well now for most of this week. Oh to feel normal again. Good health is such a blessing!

Andrey's parents are still here and will be till just before Christmas. Their visit is going GREAT! We all had low expectations of how their time would go with Michella. Once again, our daughter has blown us away with her progress. It didn't take long before she went for walks with Grandma and called out for Grandpa, "Pa! Pa!" She hugs them both before bed each night and is super excited when they come out of their bedroom in the morning.

Michella has lots of new tricks these days. I'll try to list some of them just so I can keep a record.
        • Toasting - She must have seen us do this once and now she is toasting us (continually) at the dinner table
        • Singing twinkle twinkle little star - It's not super clear but you know what she's singing. She will take a star ornament from our Christmas tree and initiate the song, to which we all chime in on numerous times a day
        • More new words, including "light!" and "bee!" (when we're traveling and passing a Jollibee)
        • Reaching for the sky - she loves doing this on walks with Grandma
        • Good sharing - we had a play date the other day and Michella is especially good at sharing with younger children
        • We got a car seat!! I can drive again!!! We started putting her in the seat with a lap belt just a few days ago to see if I could drive and it worked! With Grandma next to her she enjoyed the short experimental ride so we pulled out a booster seat a friend gave me and put it in the back seat. Michella did great with this too! We just got our car seat yesterday and so far on two trips, she's used it, and seems to really enjoy being in it. She even fell asleep in it twice today.
        • Using a stroller - I rented one at the mall the other day and it went relatively well. I wanted to see how it would go since Andrey is bringing home a stroller we bought in the States. I am especially excited about this as it will make shopping so much easier. I am currently still needing to carry her most of the time anytime we're out. It's okay for now while I have the in-laws to help me carry everything else but that won't last forever.
        • More interested in books
        • Loves to help clear the table after dinner, sweep, wipe the table, etc...
        • Hails taxi - she's quite good at this and does it without any encouragement from me, even when we aren't waiting for a taxi, we just happen to be near the street. Hilarious.
Andrey is coming home tonight. Yay!! We really missed him!

Well that's enough for now. Here are a few photos and a video just for fun...

        The Early Teen Years

My brother sent me this photo the other day. It's a photo of me and my brother on vacation with our parents in Florida in the late 80s.

There is something that changes when you have kids. I now look at this photo and immediately empathize with my mother. I remember how this day was supposed to be fun but all my brother and I did was act like a couple of jerks with major attitudes. We no doubt turned the day from one with lots of potential family-fun to a day that frustrated the heck out of my parents.

This is what my mother had to deal with often. Oh Lord have mercy! May my daughter extend more grace to me than I did to my own mother when criticizing her mothering abilities!

        Friday, November 26, 2010

This new life is beginning to feel normal... and I like it.

It's been eight weeks since we met our daughter. The past week and a half since I posted last has held some of the best days yet. It was middle of last week actually that I felt like Michella and I were beginning to hit our stride together. It is hard to tell what is the reason for this other than a variety of good things happening all at once.

What do I attribute this recent success and parenting satisfaction to? Let me reflect...
        • Prayer - I know many of you having been praying for us and it is no doubt helping. We are grateful. And I am learning to pray and rely on the Lord more in my new role as a mother. I have felt a definite shift recently in the amount of grace and joy I am experiencing.
        • We are sleeping at night. Both of us. No need to explain why sleep makes everything better.
        • She is consistently napping. Nap times no longer require a fight. She is even napping in her crib and seems to enjoy it!
        • Because of the first two points, we are both getting the sleep we need and I am getting a relatively consistent 1-1.5 hours of time in the day to get a few things that require my full attention done. For a detail-oriented, organized person, this is so helpful for me and my sanity.
        • Michella is doing AMAZING! She has become quite social and has started interacting and playing with friends and visitors. She is really falling in love with her daddy and is able to spend longer periods of time with him. She even fell asleep on him for the first time last weekend! And then did it again the next day while we were out. She is regularly reaching for him and showing spontaneous affection for him. She has also become more affectionate with me. She daily and often hugs me tight, runs to me with a huge smile on her face after time with daddy (as opposed to "losing it" and suddenly crying out for me in agony like before), kisses me, grabs my arm just to hold it, etc... Her highly emotional tantrums have slowed down to almost never and is just generally more secure and comfortable especially in our home. She dances and sings and laughs throughout the day. Many of you have blessed us in cards and email to have unspeakable joy as a family. I can say we are regularly experiencing that.
        • Some reading Ellyn Satter books. Ellyn Satter is a dietitian with tons of experience working with families regarding food and feeding - from infancy to the teenage years. I pulled out her books for a little guidance on feeding Michella and how I could improve. Not only did I find that, I found sections on "Understanding Your Toddler" and "Feeding is Parenting." As I read, things just began to click for me and I was excited to apply what I learned. She says that you'll do fine as long as you don't let your toddler control you and you don't try to control your toddler, i.e. set loving but firm boundaries on things that are really important but give lots of room and space for them to explore and learn. Don't be over-permissive and don't be over-controlling. Bingo!! I love the balance. I love Ellyn Satter's work and as far as feeding goes, I am convinced her way is the way to go. I used to base much of my teaching on infant feeding years ago on Ellyn Satter books but I never read up on anything past age one. Her hallmark is the Division of Responsibility. The more recent of the two books I have is called Child of Mine: Feeding with Love and Good Sense. Highly recommend it.
        •  A phone conversation with a dear friend who gave me some great advice. "Be a Yes Mom." Say yes to as many things as possible. (Thanks Jennell!) This really correlated with what I learned from Ellyn Satter. I think this is right on when it comes to the toddler's need to explore her environment and learn to be autonomous by developing new skills. Of course this is not in lieu of setting appropriate boundaries and having some sort of age-appropriate discipline (training) in place for unacceptable behaviors. The point is, narrow down the unacceptable behaviors to those that are truly harmful, disrespectful, damaging, etc.. and no longer try to stop behaviors that are simply annoying or messy just for my own sake and my need for control and order. Things can be cleaned up/put back later. It was an A ha! moment. Now this is how I intend to go about it at least for this stage when Michella's ability to reason is still quite limited. I imagine things will change at some point later one and I'll deal with that then.
I do know that Michella has been steadily progressing and that has not changed. What is new is that I am beginning to understand her better and this is enabling me to parent her in a more successful way. The result? A happier daughter and a happier mommy. The hardest part is definitely behind us. Whew!

Andrey was away for three days last week. Initially I was really worried about being on my own with Michella. In weeks past I was regularly having some very frustrating and tiring days with her and the fact that she was now okay with having short play times with daddy meant that I got a much-needed, short break from Michella-care when Andrey came home from work each evening. Naturally I was worried how I would do without this new, beloved luxury.  But it so happened that the sudden increase in success in my parenting I experienced coincided with Andrey's absence. That, plus the socializing I planned for a few hours each day he was away, made for a surprisingly good few days.

We had our first of three post-placement home studies last Friday. Our social worker was amazed with how well Michella is doing and said that she usually doesn't see this much progress by the first visit but commonly sees it by the second visit 3-4 months in. We are more than pleased. Michella is a bit language-delayed (to be expected in a post-institutionalized child) but other than that, we do not have any other concerns. And actually, as far as language is concerned, we aren't worried. We are confident she will catch up in time. We are already seeing evidence of this in the new words she surprises us with.

Andrey's parents arrived this week! They will be here for a month. What fun to see them meet their granddaughter for the first time. Michella has done beautifully with them - way better than expected. She is truly enjoying getting to know them. She plays and interacts with them easily, even sometimes without Andrey nor I in the room. They have already had many fun times together and it's only been two days since they arrived.

They're arrival was just in time for American Thanksgiving. We kept it simple and enjoyed a lovely dinner together. It's the first year in many that I didn't cook a feast for a crowd. What a special day though - our first Thanksgiving with Michella. It felt really special just because of that. Both Mom and I felt a bit emotional at a few points in the day. What good times.

Lou & Marilyn's visit is timely. Andrey will be traveling for 9 days in early December. It will be especially great to have them around while he's away. Unfortunately he'll be away during his and his mom's birthdays.

We're taking them to the beach tomorrow for two nights, back to the place we were at two weeks ago. I'll post more pics and video of the past week or so at a later time as it's late here and I got to get to bed. (Please forgive any mistakes in this post as I'm not going to edit it.) For now I'll just leave you with one family shot from a wedding we went to last weekend...

        Beach Weekend

Okay so I may have gone a little overboard with the pictures here but I know the grandparents will enjoy the large quantity. ;-)

We had a wonderful weekend away. I am so glad we were able to get away for a few days. Andrey is especially busy at work these days so it is really great that he was able to pull himself away for our first family road trip.

We are learning that Michella LOVES to travel! She is so curious and interested in new surroundings. She doesn't seem bothered in the slightest by being in a new place and slept really well while we were away. And she did great on the 3 hour drive. For the first time she didn't want to sit in my lap but chose to sit in between me and Andrey (with a lap belt). She did this because she wanted to be closer to him. This became clear when she would lean her head in his lap or put her arm around his. Of course every time I whipped out the camera to capture this, it was over. Before we sat her between us, she even tried to crawl in his lap and give him a big hug and a kiss while he was driving! So cute but for obvious reasons we couldn't allow it.

A quick side note here as I know you must be asking, "What? She's not in a car seat?" and that is a very valid question. 1) We don't have a car seat (yet). They cost between $400-$500 USD here for the same car seat that costs $150-$200 in the US. 2) Most people don't use car seats here and we rarely drive over 30 kph and 3) This is only temporary. We have a car seat on the way (thanks to a generous donation of some friends from the UK) and should have it this month. Then the transition begins. My goal is to have her totally used to it before we travel to the States in April when she'll have no other choice. We will start by making short trips in the neighborhood with me sitting next to her, then build on that with longer trips, and eventually get to the point where I can drive again. Oh the freedom that will bring - to be able to put her in the car seat and drive somewhere. I am currently doing all our errands and grocery shopping via taxi and get to carry everything AND Michella. Fun. I can not wait till I can drive again!

There have been a few other developments that show progress. She is no longer needing to be physically attached to me to fall asleep anymore. For the past week she has laid next to me and eventually falls asleep. She will say over and over, "Night" or "night night!" and roll over back and forth until she's sufficiently relaxed to rest. When she sits up and gives me a big, playful smile in hopes of more play time, I just calmly tell her to lie back down and she will. Eventually she falls asleep. Oh and she started this. One night last week after she was really drowsy and very close to falling asleep, she just rolled off of me. These days I hold her for a little while to read a book and pray but as soon as that's done she's ready to lie on her own. She says, "higda?" (lie down?) and points to the bed next to me. Okay sure, great, let's lie down!

As for nap times, I have been having her sleep in her room on the floor for the past several days. And at other times she has shown interest in her crib so I let her play in there and we played pretend nighttime. She'd say, "higda" and lie down with a blanket, ask for a pillow and fake sleep for a few seconds before popping up and smiling very pleased with herself. I picked up on this and thus started the sleeping in her room but today I thought I'd give the crib a try. I totally did not expect anything to come of it but to my surprise she was happy to lie down. I got her her doll, pillow and a light blanket and then laid on the floor next to her, told her it was 'night night' and proceeded to avoid eye contact. For about 15 minutes she quietly played with her "baby," continually said, "night," fidgeted with her blanket then fell asleep. This is so fantastic! So that's where she is now as I type this. And because our rooms have an adjoining bathroom, I am able to sit on our bed and have a direct line of sight to her. Could this be the beginning of her sleeping in her own room? I'm not gonna worry with night time for a while but once she's consistently napping in her room in her crib, then we'll think about making the transition at night time. I know she is old enough for the toddler bed (our crib converts) but she is quite the active, mobile sleeper so I feel better about leaving the crib intact for awhile. She doesn't seem to mind it so why not?

Okay, I must move on to other tasks. Enjoy the photos and very cute video of Michella and her dance moves at the end. I think watching her dance is one of my absolute favorite things to do (aside from seeing her kiss and hug her Daddy!)

As far as we know, Michella has not been to the ocean before. It was clearly something unfamiliar to her. She really resisted standing on the sand but did for short periods but only with shoes on. Here I am trying to get her to touch the sand hoping she'd like to play with it. No go. We did try to get her in the salt water but she wouldn't have that either. Maybe next time.

Thank God for this amazing pool! Michella is a natural! She is fearless, which puts a little fear into us as she has no problem immersing her entire head under water for up to three seconds at a time! Each time, she comes up with a big, proud smile on her face. She is great at holding her breath. She will even jump in to us and go under water on her own. We have to watch her like a hawk!

She had fun playing peek-a-boo with daddy behind these curtains

This is a backpack that the orphanage sent home with her. It's as big as she is but she loves it...

...and wanted to bring it everywhere.

As you can tell from the photos, Michella is increasingly comfortable with longer hangout times with Daddy. There were several times I just gave them space to have some time together. The break was good for me.

After a while she clued into my presence. Here she is saying in a whiny tone, "Meh Meh!!!" Other times, they would just eventually make their way back to me and she'd run to me with a huge smile on her face and give me a huge hug. I love that.

Michella loves to eat from my plate the most. And she loves getting messy with mommy eating one of her favorite foods. I used to cut the noodles up for her but then I learned that part of her enjoyment of spaghetti is getting to eat it like this photo illustrates.

Another thing Michella enjoys. Putting on socks. Any socks. Mommy's socks, Daddy's socks, Ella's socks. Oh my gosh could she be any cuter??? I know, I'm totally biased.

Overlooking the pool and ocean from our veranda. These days Michella is constantly pointing to things and saying what sounds like, "see!" and pointing to any green plant saying, "tee," which we assume means "tree."

She is less grouchy in the mornings these days and is becoming quite cheerful, pointing and smiling to things the moment I pick her up from the bed. Especially if Daddy or one of the cats is around. She will immediately point to one of them and say an enthusiastic "hi!"

Ella's first nap time on the beach. It was quite windy so we wrapped her up. Here I am still picking lice eggs out of her hair! There are only a few and I haven't found a live louse in a while but Ugh! I just want them completely gone! I'll update about the lice situation in another post. I may have found the magic bullet!
